God’s Undivided Attention
Back in January God gave me a sense of his infinite attention and what that means for me. There are a finite number of beings that take up God’s infinite attention. For those that don’t like maths: An infinite number divided by a finite number equals an infinite number.
Said in the context I mean it: ‘God’s Infinite attention’ divided by ‘the finite number of humans that exist’ equals an ‘infinite amount of God’s attention each’. You end up with no less that you started with even though you’ve divided it.
Remember the song Amazing Grace, the last verse comes to mind: “When we’ve been there 10,000 years, bright shining as the sun. We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise than when we first begun.” And so a derivative of the key : infinity / finity = infinity works here too: Infinite time in heaven minus by 10,000 days = infinite time left.
So I have the same amount of God’s infinate attention as if there was only me or a billion billion other people trying to sap it. For me this is quite important. I felt like I was quite affected by the fact that there were 4 kids in the family and that my parents attention was divided before it even got to giving attention to the kids (as you’d expect a human parent to !). Minor attention deficit. However, because God’s attention is infinate, no matter how many times it is divided you still end up with the same amount that you started with - it’s as if God’s attention is undivided.
As soon as that dawned, God gave me a massive spiritual sense of his constant unerring delighted adoring gaze upon me. The constancy of His gaze was soo overpowering, I just couldn’t get away from it (not that I wanted to of course, but where could I go from his gaze? (as the psalmist nearly said)) It lasted about a weekend, and for a weekend I was totally wasted - I had a picture too that I can still remember that describes His unending gaze upon me and my soul pretty well. I’m reminded of it often. Through all of this God has brought real healing to me.
I had the words: “You have God’s undivided attention” on my phone as a startup message for months. It’s a helpful if slightly incorrect phrase, which should be “You have all of God’s attention” but that doesn’t sound as good!
So what I’ve been trying to do for a while now is take the key of: ‘One of God’s infinite attributes’ divided by ‘finite number of humans’ equals ‘all of that attribute’ and unlock some other locks. Doesn’t seem to be happenning - I guess it’s just attempting to unlock something intellectually just doesn’t work - as it is often said: it is revelation, not information that brings transformation. And that’s exactly what I got the first time. Interesting, but I still feel like it’s God’s intention to take me further on this line.
Of course now I see that I have all of God’s attention, I can also see that each one of us has God’s undivided attention too, and that is a real challenge!
